What is Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)?
Medium density fibre board is a durable material, lightweight engineered wood made from wood fibres and pulp combined with wax and resin. Because manufacturers make it from byproducts of other wood manufacturing processes, it tends to be significantly cheaper than intact planks. There are a range of lengths and thicknesses of standard MDF sheets, and there are several other types (see below), all of which are available in full sheets or cut to size.
How is MDF made?
Historically, wood mills discarded vast quantities of wood chips from conventional plank processing. Because of this, William Mason, a friend of Thomas Edison, made it his mission to prevent them from going to waste. In the 1920s, he set out to create a new type of material fibreboard that people would later call MDF.
Standard MDF sheets manufacturing begins with collecting wood chips and sawdust. Next, they combine the wood powder with a resin that binds the particles together. The production of engineered wood based sheet is exceptionally modest.
After compression, the wood chips arrange themselves into uniform sheets, yielding a strong, thin piece of wood that’s easy to cut to size, shape, and cut precise to the mm.
What is MDF used for?
MDF board is one of the most versatile construction materials on the market, used in all categories of construction and for DIY enthusiasts too. It is used to make all sorts of furniture for the home in all kinds of thickness, it’s lightweight and can be painted too. The following are typical interior applications using MDF boards…
- Media Units
- Bunk Beds
- Kitchen Cabinets
- Shelving Units

Medite Premier MDF
This is a do-it-all MDF made using advanced wood chip processing technology and special resins. Thanks to of its face properties, it is an excellent material for thin laminates and cutting mm perfect. For most indoor projects standard grade MDF sheets cut to size are the ideal choice.
Medite moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture Resistant MDF (MR MDF) is a type of standard MDF sheet designed for internal humid interiors, such as kitchens and bathrooms. A light sanding will help produce a smooth surface. Please note the edges are not primed, just the surface. The edges should be painted separately.
Flame retardant MDF (FR MDF)
Flame retardant MDF (FR MDF) is a medium-density fibreboard developed specifically to enhance building fire protection, differing from standard MDF sheets. FR MDF is commonly used in public buildings. Same as other MDF products, FR MDF can be painted however, the coating may affect its fire rating performance. This MDF board is often used in exhibitions, wall lining, display panels, ceilings and partitions. Our flame retardant mdf are specifically designed to slow the spread of fire for up to 30 minutes, giving it the Euroclass C Fire Rating. Please note the edges are not primed for Flame Retardant MDF (FR MDF), just the surface. The edges should be painted separately.
Medite flexible MDF
Medite flexible MDF board creates smooth curved surfaces for exhibitions or product displays. Manufacturers make a series of minor cuts on the back of these MDF sheets enabling boards to flex and fix into the desired position.
Tricoya MDF board is one of the world’s leading modified wood timber technology brands for outdoor use. Tricoya uses wood fibres processed using acetylation, which adjusts their cell structure to make panels more dimensionally stable.
MDF Radiator Grilles
MDF radiator grilles are pieces of conventional MDF board with delicate lattice cutout details precise to the mm. Their primary functions are safety and to make radiators more attractive.
Textured Melamine Faced MDF
Melamine-faced boards are faced with melamine, a nitrogen-based compound with excellent aesthetic properties. This textured standard MDF board features a soft, undulating finish.
Velvet Ultramat MDF
Velvet Ultramat gets its name because of how it resembles velvet. The matte finish makes it resistant to finger marks, making it an excellent choice for doors and panels in the kitchen.
Valchromat is an MDF-like material. However, it is not the same as MDF. Manufacturers make it by individually impregnating each wood fibre with organic dyes. They then bind them together with a proprietary resin that gives the product its unique mechanical and physical features.
Valchromat is available in multiple colours. People use it for wall cladding, bathrooms, shelving, countertops and kitchen cabinets.
