What is Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)?

Medium density fibre board is a durable material, lightweight engineered wood made from wood fibres and pulp combined with wax and resin. Because manufacturers make it from byproducts of other wood manufacturing processes, it tends to be significantly cheaper than intact planks. There are a range of lengths and thicknesses of standard MDF sheets, and there are several other types (see below), all of which are available in full sheets or cut to size.

How is MDF made?

Historically, wood mills discarded vast quantities of wood chips from conventional plank processing. Because of this, William Mason, a friend of Thomas Edison, made it his mission to prevent them from going to waste. In the 1920s, he set out to create a new type of material fibreboard that people would later call MDF.

Standard MDF sheets manufacturing begins with collecting wood chips and sawdust. Next, they combine the wood powder with a resin that binds the particles together. The production of engineered wood based sheet is exceptionally modest.

After compression, the wood chips arrange themselves into uniform sheets, yielding a strong, thin piece of wood that’s easy to cut to size, shape, and cut precise to the mm.
